AmbiLED HD setup for Hyperion on RaspBMC/OSMC

RaspBMC (OSMC) is the best mediaPC software for Raspberry Pi and Pi 2 hardwares.
RaspBMC project stopped in the first days of 2015 and now continue as OSMC with Pi 2 support.
Click here and download the installer into your PC

You can use this article as a reference for other Linux distros that supported by Hyperion.

Notice: This article for your reference only. If you have any question about Hyperion, Linux or other third part details, please google it or ask to their communities.  Please do not ask here “how can I list a linux directory?” like questions.

After the RaspBMC / OSMC installation, be sure it’s updated and working properly.  (run some videos or something like that)
Learn the Network address of your PI from about section of RaspBMC (Settings section of OSMC) and note.

  • Connect to your Pi using any terminal application.  Putty.exe is the best for Windows. (default RaspBMC user name “pi”, password “raspberry” , default OSMC user name “osmc” password “osmc”)
  • Enter following commands in order. You can find the details here
    sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get install libqtcore4 libqtgui4 libqt4-network libusb-1.0-0 libprotobuf7 ca-certificates
    wget -N
    sudo sh ./
  • Now you have a working Hyperion on your Pi.
Follow this article to configure it.
  • Unfortunately, configuration software is not including an option for AmbiLED HD hardware, but no worry, Hyperion is supporting it.  Choose “Adalight” as LED Type
  • Important: Choose Whilelvl as “0.50” or less. Do not choose more than 0.5 value.
  • Output is “/dev/ttyAMA0″ for most of RaspberyyPi.
You can check it with this command . Any problem? google it

    ls -l /dev/ttyAMA0
  • After you saved your new config file. Replace the original /etc/hyperion.config.json file with new one. (Linux skill required)
  • Enter this command to open text editor:
    sudo nano /etc/hyperion.config.json
  • You will see inside of configuration file.
    Find this line:
    “type” : “adalight”
Replace the “adalight” part with “ambiled”
And Press CTR+O to save and CTRL+X to exit.
  • Restart your Hyperion with
    sudo /sbin/initctl restart hyperion

If you made right, AmbiLED HD will work.

*You can change the hyperion main settings with hyperion-remote
You can find the details under hyperion wiki

Any problem?

You can find our default hyperion.config.json here
And these are the screen shots of configurator for this file

Changing AmbiLED HD Firmwares

AmbiLED HD hardware has based on Arduino Nano and you can update the firmware with XLoader.

Current Firmwares

  • AmbiLED_Original_Firmware_1_0.hex
The default firmware of AmbiLED. You can use this firmware to convert your hardware to factory default.
  • AmbiLED_Long_Strip_Firmware_1_0.hex
Long strips mean, long color data.  Long data mean, slow refresh rate. If you have longer strip then 250 pixel, We are suggesting this firmware for you. This firmware doubling the pixel data and reducing the resolution to half. So, If you have 600 LEDs, you can use this firmware and your setup acts like 300 LEDs strip. The resolution still higher than you need for ambient light and refresh rate will be twice.  You should set the LED counts half of  the real values in the driver softwares.
  • AmbiLED_Adalight_Emulator_Firmware.hex
Adalight is well known ambient light software and have a lot of support including Boblight, Hyperion, Prismatik, AmbiBox  and others. If you are using Linux or Mac, you can use adalight supported softwares with our hardware. Just load this firmware into AmbiLED HD  controller. It will act like Adalight.
(Please don’t ask software setup details in this pages, google it or search their own forums)

Step by Step Firmware Installation

  1. Exit the driver software to close com port connection.
  2. Download Xloader and Firmware packs from our repository
  3. Extract the Zip File and run XLoader.exeXloader1
  4. Select firmware .hex file.
    Select Duemilanove/Nano(ATmega328) device
    Select AmbiLED Com port.
  5. Press Upload button
  6. You will see uploaded status message belowXloader4
  7. Close Xloader before run the driver software again.

Trouble Shooting

  • If any problem, check the com port, device name and file permissions.
“Run as Administrator” mode resolves most of file permission errors.

AmbiBox Settings for AmbiLED HD

AmbiBox is the best freeware ambient light software for ambient light hardwares and  it’s supporting AmbiLED HD since v2.1.7

This manual only for AmbiLED HD setup. If you are using different hardware or software questions please Google it or contact with AmbiBox developer.

You can help the developer to keep it free.

  • Visit AmbiBox web site
  • Download the software
  • Run the installer and simply install with “Next” button
  • Install the PlayClaw if you want to capture from full screen games
  • Select the “AmbiLED” from the “Ambilight Device” list
  • Press Next
  • Lunch the software

  1. Press the More Settings button to enable advanced settings.
  2. Choose the COM Port of AmbiLED. If you don’t know the port number, You can find the comport number under Windows Device Manager.(video) It is COM3 for most of computers.AmbiBox5
Set the LED count from Number of zones combo box. Most of ambient light devices have less than 20 zones. This is why AmbiBox supports maximum 300 zones.
  3. Check the Use backlight check box to enable your AmbiLED.
Set the Maximum FPS value to 10-12 FPS for the first time.
AmbiLED HD hardware need more data than other ambient light systems because of high LED count. You should limit the refresh rate to avoid the flickering.
Press Show areas of capture button to set capture zones.
  4. You will see the zones around your display. But they are starting from the right-bottom edge.
    Press Wizard capture zones button
  5. Enter the horizontal and vertical LED counts.
Enter the offset value. (Half of horizontal value for standard AmbiLED installation)
Enter the GAP value to Bottom cutout field if you have a gap.
Set the other fields if you have dual monitors,  3D content or others.
    Press Apply button.
  6. Press Save Settings to record the default profile settings.
AmbiBox supporting multi profiles and Automatic profile modes for different applications. So, You can set different zones for different situations.
  7. Now, you should set the pixel colors for better AmbiLED experience. The default AmbiBox values are higher than we need. This is normal because most of system are working under full power to illuminate the wall with small LED count. But we have a lot of LED.
So, check the For all zones check box first and set the Brightness between 20-40. Then set the others as the picture shown below.
Set the Smoothing as zero for fast LED reactions.
Press Save settings button to save.
  8. If everything is OK, you can try other screen capture methods from The method of screen capture combo box. AmbiBox3

Trouble Shooting

  • Flickering: It’s possible if the capture speed higher than data transmission speed of hardware. Reduce the Maximum FPS value or increase the Delay output of LED value
  • No Action: Probably, your COM port setting is wrong.
